Ataxia Telangiectasia or A-T, Close to Our Hearts

Promoting at a local parade for the 7th A-T Telethon!

In college we participated and produced a 9 hour live broadcast telethon for a disease called Ataxia Telangiectasia (or A-T for short) at our Alma Mater, UW-Oshkosh. This telethon is an amazing accomplishment for us ladies and the tradition at UW-O carries on!

What is A-T?

Ataxia-telangiectasia, or A-T, is a rare genetic disease that attacks children, causing progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems, and a high rate of cancer. Children with A-T are unable to walk by the age of 10 and rarely live to see their 20’s.

How We Got Involved

Our major wasn’t ever your normal college adventure. After class we went to meeting after meeting, and we worked the weekends on film shoots, TV shows, script writing, and being involved in every organization imaginable. We loved every minute of it. But there was something to be said about the A-T Telethon. This experience went above everything else we had accomplished in college. This was about the kids, their families, and hope.

We grew to know many of the families in our area whose children were living with A-T. Some of which were so young their symptoms were barely noticeable, others were wheel chair bound and the affects of the disease had taken a toll on their day-to-day living. As producers, we easily became attached, and the telethon became more than just another project. It became something we knew had to happen. We had to take a part in making sure there was awareness of the disease but also financial support to help work towards finding a cure.

It started a few years before our college careers began and continues today with the current Radio-TV-Film students at UW-O. This Saturday marks the 11th Annual A-T Telethon! Most of the people putting on this production are students and ALL of them are doing it for free. No credits, no paychecks, FREE. This is a broadcast that is months in the making and we want to show our support by sharing the telethon with you!

Saturday, February 23rd from 5pm to midnight CST,

where you can watch the live stream, donate, or view auction items.

We’ve even sent in our own package to be auction off! Since we love our DIY projects and wine related items, we decided to donate some to a good cause! You’ve seen our chalk board wine glasses before, but this time we decided to do a NEW wine cork craft (instead of the bar tray) and make a trivet! We tossed in some OAM swag for good measure.

Lastly, we just want to say that this is not a well-know disease, so the A-T Children’s Project doesn’t get the same kind of publicity that other organizations do. That means money is limited. We encourage you to do all that you can to help out these kids and their families. They appreciate anything you can give.

Thank you,
Ali, Bryce, Kyla, & Tosha

I’ve been tracking the auction items and writing down which ones I’m bidding on. Yours has been officially added to my ‘watch list’ so I can bid on it!! Thanks for the support ladies – I know the special place we all have in our hearts for the telethon.

Thanks Randi! Know that those items were hand made with loooooove!

But that’s a good idea to make a list ahead of time. Now I’ll have to go through them and make a list of my own!
