This Cup Isn’t for Just a Diva – The Diva Cup

Tampon. Pad. Diva Cup?!

We’ve all been in a situation where we needed our go to our friendly neighborhood gas station for an emergency box of feminine products because we ran out on our vacation. Or how about the time where you’re in a public bathroom and the tampon vending machine has just eaten your quarter without giving you the cotton plug you desperately need? Maybe it’s time to consider the option that sticks with you through light and heavy flow. I’m talking about the Diva Cup.

The Diva Cup website describes it as “a reusable, bell-shaped menstrual cup that is worn internally and sits low in the vaginal canal, collecting rather than absorbing your menstrual flow. Perfect for all activities (on air, land or sea), its easy care and use make for a better period experience. Wear The DivaCup for up to 12 hours without leaks or worry.”

Consider, for a moment, that amount of garbage you will be reducing by using a diva cup. No more used tampons or pads AND you’ll save on TP as well by not having to  wrap those puppies up before throwing them away!

Before you starting thinking “ew. I don’t want to have to wash that thing out!” think about one of the major concerns women on their periods are self-conscious about. Smell. Blood develops a different smell when exposed to oxygen. Pads and tampons are exposed to the air when you wear them and will create an odor throughout the day. Because the diva cup is internal, you will not have that problem.

Any woman should be able to use this product. It’s flexible, comes in different sizes, and can be used even if you have an IUD or NuvaRing.

If you decide to try out the Diva Cup, you’ll have to replace about once a year. And at roughly $32 a pop, you’ll be saving yourself some dough. Probably not a TON of savings, but savings nonetheless.

I had thought about using a Diva Cup a few months back, but the fact that I’ve always used tampons, and the lack of testimonials on how well the product actually works has kind of scared me away!

I may have to think again?

oh do think again!! It doesn’t sit as high as a tampon and doesn’t have the drying effect of those… fab thing!

How long has this been out on the market? Has it been health/board approved? Are their any long term health effects from using this product? It makes me nervous that we are not suppose to sleep in tampons but we can leave this in for 12 hrs. at a time without developing health problems. How do you know what size to get? Does it have a handle on it or string or something so you know how far to insert it, and have something to grab on to when you are ready to retrieve it.? Do you use a anti-bacterial soap to clean out the cup? What material is the cup made of? Thanks for sharing I was unaware something like this even existed. I haven’t seen a commercial on this product yet.

These are all excellent questions! I saw on the website that the Diva cup is regulated by the U.S. FDA. As for the other questions, they have all the answers here:

Thanks for bringing up all those important points!

Honestly, this product makes me nervous. I’m not sold on leaving it in for 12 hours at a time without any health problems, and I’m not convinced this would not leak especially for us ladies that can have heavy flows. Have any of you ladies of OAM used it??

Heavy flows is great. I usually empty and clean it every 6-8 hours the first couple of days, then morning and evening works great.

        Hmm. That intrigues me.

I tried Instead and it made a mess. Not the first time, but the second… I like the idea of wearing it internally, but I’m wondering how that feels.

Could you take a spin class wearing it? Hard to find protection that feels good in a spin class…

I love love love this product. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine and at first I was reluctant to try it but once I did, no going back. It’s great for the environment and for me. I recommended 100%. You don’t feel it. It takes a few tries to get it right but once you do its great.

I use the Mooncup… same thing. I cannot explain how life changing it’s been. No leaks, with just a little practice it’s the easiest thing in the world to use, and I don’t even know I have my period. Absolutely fan bloody tastic!! 🙂

I used to be a part of a book club and almost everyone else in it swore by these. They described it as life changing. I was also a little grossed out at the idea, but I am curious now.

I’ve never used the Divacup… it’s the longest cup on the market, I have a low cervix, it would not fit. But I love love love my Fleurcup. There are like two dozen brands out there, the Diva is just one among many!
Cups are great. Every menstruating woman should give them a go and see if they work for her.
