Secrets of a Pageant Girl: Topic 1 – Makeup for Legs

There are many secrets and tips that pageant girls latch onto (and sometimes try to keep to themselves), but I thought I would divulge some of those secrets here.

My pageant days are over. I am what those in the pageant world call a “has been”. Sounds harsh, doesn’t it? To throw another pageant term out there for you; I have “aged out” of the Miss America Organization (MAO) and have been ineligible to compete since I turned 24.

Before I hung up my heels and gowns, I held two local titles in the MAO, which allowed me to compete for the title of Miss Wisconsin twice. Although I didn’t capture the state crown (I made the top ten and was awarded Spirit of Miss America my second year), I did learn a lot from my days of competing. I have also co-produced/directed the Miss Oshkosh Pageant with my great friend, Leah, for the past three years.

So, is it time to spill some of the secrets? Yes.

First secret: Makeup for your legs.

When I first competed at the Miss Oshkosh pageant in 2005, pantyhose (or nylons, whatever you prefer to call them) were still often worn. However, as many of now know – the days of pantyhose are gone. Once the ancient garments disappeared, pageant girls were left with a conundrum: how do you get the smooth, even-toned look that pantyhose provided? Answer: Makeup!

I call it “Magic Sexy Legs in a Can”. Well, I just made that up, but it’s true. It’s magic. It’s sexy. It’s legs. It’s in a can.

Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs

How much does it cost?

This stuff is liquid gold – and because of that, it comes with a hefty price tag. It’s about $12 for 4.4 oz. at Walgreens. I will throw down 12-buckaroonies any day for this stuff because it’s worth it.

What does it do?

This spray gives your gams an all over color with just a hint of sparkle for that sexy sheen. It takes care of uneven skin color, freckles, bruises, etc. Plus, it makes your legs feel VERY smooth! It truly gives you all the benefits of pantyhose without the bulk, the possibility of holes and runs, and the weird lines around your tummy.

It is VERY easy to use. As long as you get a color that is close to your natural skin color, you shouldn’t have any problem. I believe the instructions on the can say to spray on your hands and then apply. However,  I have found that it is much easier and FASTER to spray a line from your knee down to your foot. Rub that in. Don’t be afraid to rub a little along the top of your feet to make it look natural. Then spray another line from your knee on up, and rub in. Repeat on your other leg and you are good to go!!

How well does it work?

One of my concerns with this product the first time I tried it was whether it would run or rub off on my clothes if I were to sweat. It didn’t budge! The color lasted until I showered the next morning. See, magic!

Stay tuned for more secrets and tips!

Happy airbrushing,

I also use Stila tinted moisturizer on my legs. It’s less messy and give a nice natural coverage. A makeup artist gave me that tip and I’ve been doing it for years.
